Large Breasts Causing You Pain in the Neck or Back? Find Out How Your Health Insurance Can Help You Achieve a Breast Reduction Surgery

Having large breasts is not necessarily a good thing, nor is it something that every woman desires. Having large breasts can sometimes become a physical detriment, causing neck and back pain, poor posture, rashy and/or irritated skin, and overall physical discomfort or immobility.

Having large breasts is often genetic. Large breasts is also related to hormones, such as puberty and child-birth. Whatever the case may be, some insurances understand the medical necessity to have breasts reduced in size to help achieve overall physical (and some times, psychological) health.

Health insurances often times require documentation to prove the medical need for this type of surgery. This usually includes a letter from your treating Plastic Surgeon explaining the need for this type of surgery, and/or other doctor(s)/specialist who have tried other methods to cure the problem (like Chiropractic treatments to treat back pain or improve posture).

Depending on one's health insurance benefits, and the criteria that the patient meets, health insurances may help cover partial, or even the full cost, of this surgery.

Society's Interest in Celebrity Plastic Surgery

You see it in the tabloids, you hear on the news and popular t.v. shows all the time...it's the constant talk about celebrity plastic surgery.

It's true, society is guilty as charged for being extremely interested in celebrity plastic surgery gossip. In the "Mecca" of Celebrities and Plastic Surgery, Beverly Hills/Hollywood, it's almost innate. Everybody wants to know how to stay on top, look their best, and have the inside scoop to the beauty-secrets to Hollywood's most elite stars!

We take a look at the most recent celebrity who's physical facial appearance has certainly changed, Bristol Palin. So, did she or didn't she do more than just corrective jaw surgery?

I asked the experts, Beverly Hills Plastic Surgeons: Dr. John Layke and Dr. Payman Danielpour,
"Based on the photo above, do you believe that Bristol Palin just had corrective jaw surgery alone to achieve this look?"

Dr. Layke, (giving Bristol Palin the benefit of the doubt) answers, " I believe that corrective jaw surgery certainly can cause major aesthetic changes to the lower part of the face. When this type of surgery is performed, the patient's mouth is typically wired shut for a period of time, where solid foods are impossible to eat, which can result in significant weight loss. It certainly looks like she lost weight, and you can see the difference in her face. With that being said, certain cosmetic procedures can be performed to achieve this look and allow these changes as well."

Dr. Danielpour emphasizes on what those surgeries could be to achieve this result, " To achieve a more contoured chin and neck, liposuction can be performed in these areas, in conjunction with, or without, an extended chin implant. Also, to have more prominent looking cheeks, this may be done by performing a buccal lipectomy procedure (removing fat from the buccal pad/mid cheek region). "
Dr. Layke adds to that, "Fillers, like Restylane, Juvederm, Sculptra, Radiesse, Fat Transfer, and Cheek Implants, are also commonly performed to achieve fuller, more prominent cheeks."

So there you have it, "Did she? Or didn't she?" I guess we all have our speculations.
Not everybody will admit to having Plastic Surgery, and perhaps those that we think have had surgery, have not. Plastic Surgery has come a LONG way, and the more natural-looking (discrete) the results, the better!!!

Dr. Layke and Dr. Danielpour: Beverly Hills Breast Revision/Correction Specialist

Unfortunately, in the world of Plastic Surgery, exact surgical outcomes are not a guarantee, and breast surgery is of no exception. Despite any surgeon's best efforts, unforeseen issues can arise with a patient's healing process, which are beyond any surgeon's control, which can ultimately lead to prolonged recovery or subsequent surgeries. Though this is rare, we are dealing with a very intricate, very complex human body... and these things can happen.

With any breast prosthesis (implant) surgery, the biggest concerns have to do with the scarring process around the implants, otherwise known as the scar capsules. Other concerns have to do with placement, symmetry, size, longevity of the implants and aesthetic results. Additionally, the overall health and function/sensation of the breast is equally as important.
Being extremely mindful of these concerns, both Dr. Layke and Dr.Danielpour thoroughly examine every individual patient (even if the patient has had a previous breast surgery or even multiple surgeries) and formulate the best surgical plan for achieving a successful outcome. Having two fully trained surgeons that specialize in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, allows for two separate and extremely knowledgeable perspectives to collaborate and design a more ensuring surgical experience.

Complex Breast Surgery, Revisional Breast Surgery, Breast Reconstruction, and Primary Breast Surgery...Dr. Danielpour and Dr. Layke specialize in it all!

To find out what Surgical Plan regarding Breast Surgery is best for you, please call us today to schedule your personalized consultation!

Would you like the inside secret to smooth and renewed skin??? Beverly Hills Plastic Surgery Group lets you in on it...

Do you have skin that has suffered from sun damage, stress, acne, or just natural aging? You don't have to have skin that shows it any longer! Renew your skin! Rewind the clock to younger-looking, luminous skin!

Fractionated CO2 Laser Resurfacing

Fractionated CO2 laser treatments are performed to reduce the appearance of deep facial wrinkles, melasma (darkened areas of skin), and acne scarring. In addition to areas of the face, fractionated lasers can be used to treat other areas of the body such as the neck, chest, hands, and more.

The CO2 fractionated laser deeply penetrates into the skin's layers/ dermis by creating tiny wounds that the body repairs by increasing production of collagen and elastin and generating renewed, and flawless skin.

The process of directing a light source to target a selected area of the skin seeks to only damage certain zones, (producing tiny dot-like treated areas on the skin), leaving the other zones within it perfectly intact; hence only causing fractional damage. This allows the skin to heal much faster than if the whole area was treated.

The length of time for the procedure is dependent on how many areas are being treated. typically for the face, it takes about 30mins. The patient can be awake fro this procedure, though topical numbing medication is certainly recommended.

Within about a week, the majority of the redness and inflammation will have subsided and the skin will start to appear healthy and glowing. The benefits continue for years to come with proper skin care and proper skin protection!

If you are interested in learning more about the benefits of fractionated laser treatments and how to refresh and renew your skin, please call us at 310.275.6600and schedule your personalized consultation with Beverly Hills Plastic Surgeons, Dr. Layke and Dr. Danielpour!!!!

What is the difference between a "Mini" Tummy Tuck and a Standard Tummy Tuck?

Let me start by answering, "What is Mini Tummy Tuck?" A mini tummy tuck, which may also be addressed as a "modified tummy tuck", IS still a tummy tuck, just not as extensive as that of a full (standard) tummy tuck.

A mini tummy tuck procedure is perfect for both men and women who have a small to moderate amount of fullness and/or redundant abdominal skin (primarily in the lower abdominal region.) The operation is often executed with the patient under general anesthesia for the patient's comfort. Prior to surgery, the surgeon(s) will have already identified the area of skin in which will be excised. The extent or length of the incision depends on that concluding action. But in the case of a mini tummy tuck, the ellipse of skin to be removed is below the belly button, and is typically a smaller amount of fat and skin to be removed than that compared to a conventional tummy tuck. This is the reason why it is also referred as "mini" or "modified" tummy tuck. In many cases, a mini tummy tuck also involves liposuction of the abdomen and waist to achieve the best contour.

In a conventional tummy tuck, the doctor needs to move the patient’s navel. The surgeon(s) undermine and elevate the skin and fat from the abdominal muscle, typically as high as possible (to just about under the bottom of the chest. The belly button is detached from its surrounding skin allowing the skin to slide/move as much extra skin and fat down to close the open wound. The excess skin is then cut away. The belly button stalk is buried and therefore a new hole must be created to reattach to the belly button stalk. Thus, this is why many patients explain that they have a new belly button from a tummy tuck procedure. The reality is, the belly button is still the same belly button, it is just surrounded by skin that was once about it.

Geometrically, because the ellipse of skin is greater with a fill tummy tuck, this is the reason why the incision is longer than that of a mini tummy tuck.

Interested in a tighter, flatter, abdomen? Diet and exercise just not cutting it?

Want to know if a conventional tummy tuck or mini tummy tuck is best for you?

Don't Let Your Neck Look Like It Belongs to a Turkey

Eliminating the Turkey Neck

If you have concerns about a your neck being loose, saggy, aged-appearing, or even gobble-like, then a neck-lift procedure might just be your best solution!

Due to any of the following reasons; aging, weight loss, and exposure to sunlight over the years, these reasons alone (but not limited to) can be the cause of skin on a one's neck to lose its natural vitality. A neck lift is a surgical procedure that improves the appearance of a patient’s neck by removing excess skin and tightening the muscles underneath. Sometimes liposuction is also performed in conjunction with the neck lift procedure to achieve ideal results. Typically, the procedure takes most Plastic Surgeons anywhere from 2-3 hours to perform the surgery on a patient, which is mostly depending on methods/techniques that the Surgeons are using. A neck lift usually involves several small incisions placed discreetly behind the ears and under the chin, through which the surgeons can access the underlying tissue. Though surgery plan and technicalness can vary based on what is needed for every patient, it is most common that doctors remove fat deposits and excess skin. The neck lift procedure is typically painless; however, every patients' tolerance is different from one person to the next. A majority of neck-lift patients express they felt only minor discomfort, and most patients are able to return to work (mild activity) within a week or two after having the procedure performed.

Who's a Candidate?

If you are are healthy person who has realistic expectations about the procedure and its outcome, you could be a candidate for neck lift surgery. The best suggestion is to schedule a consultation with Dr. Layke and Dr. Danielpour to have a personalized detailed discussion about what you can achieve, expect, and even what your limitations are (if any).

A neck lift can make patients look younger, slimmer and boost one's self-confidence!!!

What is the difference between Doctors that are a "D.O." and a "M.D."?

Over the years, patients have asked, "What is the difference between doctors that have "D.O." vs, "M.D." ? So here it is...

  • Both D.O.s and M.D.s typically have a four year undergraduate degree prior to medical training.
  • Both D.O.s and M.D.s have spent four-years in medical education, have taken the MCAT and are subject to a meticulous application process. Traditionally, D.O. schools are more open to the non-traditional candidate.
  • D.O.s, like M.D.s, choose to practice in a specialty area of medicine and complete a residency program ranging from 3-7 years. Some D.O.s complete the same residency programs as their M.D. counterparts.
  • M.D. students take the USMLE exam and D.O. students take the COMPLEX exam, but both must pass a state licensing examination to practice medicine.
  • D.O.s perform surgery, deliver children, treat patients, prescribe medications and work in the same settings as M.D.s. D.O.s use the same tools, treatments and technologies of medicine as M.D.s.
  • D.O.s receive extra training in the musculoskeletal system, which make up the muscles and bones of a person.

D.O.s have been specially trained to perform osteopthic manipulations on patients. They view the patient as a 'total person" (a whole) and focus on preventative care. They view the entire body rather than treat specific symptoms or illness. D.O.s use Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT) in their practice. This involves the use of their hands to diagnose injury and illness and to encourage your body's natural ability to heal. Osteopathic medicine is a fast-growing segment of the United States healthcare field. This is the biggest difference between a M.D., and a D.O.

*Osteopathic medicine is practiced by D.O.s in the United States. Osteopathic medicine was developed in 1874 by Dr. A.T. Still who stated "Any variation from health has a cause, and the cause has a location. It is the business of the osteopathic physician to locate and remove it, doing away with the disease and getting healthy instead." He believed that many medications (at that time) were useless and even harmful. He identified the musculoskeletal system as a key component for good health. *mommd.com

So whether you are looking for a Doctor of Medicine or a Doctor of Osteopath, we have them both! Payman Danielpour, M.D., and John Layke, D.O.

Raise Your Brows

How do I know if I'm a candidate for a Brow Lift?

You are a candidate for a brow lift if your eyebrow is touching or below the upper bony rim of your eye. In most women, eyebrows are usually at or above the bony rim. The eyebrow may fall below this rim with age, which gives you a tired or unintentionally angry look. In most men, if the eyebrow is below the bony rim, they may appear angry or tired looking as well.

A forehead lift, or brow lift, can help to reduce the creases across the forehead and raise the position of the eyebrows. This procedure is beneficial for those with vertical wrinkles between the eyebrows or horizontal forehead wrinkles.

How soon will I be able to notice the results of my brow lift?
Patients will be able see results of their brow lift almost immediately afterward.

How long does the healing process take?
The majority of all swelling should be resolved within two weeks. The initial healing will be complete by the first month, with the total healing process proceeding for a few additional months.

What is the discomfort associated with this procedure?
There is mild to moderate discomfort associated with a brow lift. The pain can easily be relieved with medication.

What can I expect in the time following the procedure?
The brow lift should be quite stale and effective for a number of years, giving a better forehead contour and position of the eyebrows.

How long is the recovery period from this procedure?
The patient will be able to return to work in approximately one week.

To see how you can benefit from a Brow Lift Procedure, call us at 310.275.6600

In the Plastic Surgery World, we are all working as a entire society, as well as individuals, to create, invent, discover and explore the most effective treatments known to man today. These treatments range anywhere from non-surgical anti-aging treatments, to operative reconstruction of the face and/or body.

In this world of modern medicine and where science is forever-evolving, what we know today can be history tomorrow.

Sleeping On Your Back Will Help You Maintain Looking Young

While there are many different variables as to why we age and get wrinkles, (i.e., sun exposure, genetics, smoking, lack of adequate sleep, constant folds in the skin casued by facial expressions, etc), the best solutions to an aging face are by practicing prevention.

One effective action to preventing an aging face is by committing to sleep on your back. When you sleep on your back, you are preventing your face from getting squished or creased, and it would be if you slept on your stomach or side. Sleeping in certain positions night after night leads to "sleep lines": wrinkles that become etched into the surface of the skin and don't disappear once you're up. Even when you sleep on your side, you increase the chances of developing wrinkles on your cheeks and chin, while sleeping face-down gives you a furrowed brow.

Suggestively, if laying on your back is difficult to do, or is a challenge to not turn over, try sleeping with a pillow underneath your knees to prevent you from rolling over, which may also prevent any lower back pressure you might experience.

Tonight, give it a try! And should you succeed...look at how refreshed and "line-free" you'll look in the morning!

The Notorious and Ever-Popular "Brazilian Butt-lift"

Kim Kardashian and Jennifer Lopez. What do they primarily have in common that every body seems to envy these days... Yep! Their curvaceous derrières!

These days, the Brazilian Butt-lift procedure is in high demand to give ladies (and even men) that full, round, perfect behind.

So, what is the Brazilian Butt-lift and how is it done?
This is done with liposuction of the waist, abdomen, and trunk areas to harvest fat. This fat is then purified, such that the top level of fluid, serum, and red blood cells are removed. This extracted fat is handled gently, cleaned and set aside for re-injection. This harvest and re-injection process needs to be done carefully as this is what yields long lasting results.

Healing: Immediately after your procedure, you will be dressed in a specially designed supportive garment and sent home to rest. Staying off of your backside for the next couple of weeks is crucial to the healing process and to assure that the implanted fat cells receive adequate blood supply. You will need a caregiver at all times during the first 24 hours but in a few days you can resume limited activity.

Results may very from person to person, therefore it is always important to go over a patient's expectations and create the most logical and realistic surgical plan to ensure the highest satisfaction.

What is Anesthesia, and is it SAFE?

Anesthesia is the total loss of feeling or sensation. It is primarily used when surgeries are performed to block any painful sensations for the patient. There are different types of anesthesia. What are the indications for performing anesthesia?
What are the types of anesthesia?
There are four main categories of anesthesia most commonly used. These include: local anesthesia, regional anesthesia, sedation and general anesthesia.

What is local anesthesia?
Local anesthesia is when injections of local anesthetic drug medications are used to block sensation to a smaller and more specific area of the body or face.

What is regional anesthesia?
Regional anesthesia typically is referring to the use of local anesthetic drugs to block an area/region of the body. It does so by blocking a set of nerves that are responsible for the sensation of that area. An example of this is an epidural. Regional anesthesia does not affect the brain, but might used in conjunction with sedation for additional patient comfort.

What is sedation?
Sedation is the use of drug medications to make a patient feel extremely relaxed and "drowsy”, therefore supporting the patient to feel more comfortable. It does not result in complete unconsciousness, but can result in amnesia (not remembering) and the patient may actually doze off and fall asleep for a period of time.

What is general anesthesia?
General anesthesia is when medications are used that affects the brain in a way that causes unconsciousness/unawareness. As a result, the patient becomes unaware of stimulation and pain and does not remember anything during this time .Some of the medications used are the same or similar to medications that are used in sedation, but often at a higher dose.

What makes anesthesia safe?
Your anesthesiologist is responsible to know as much as possible about your overall health from the start of your anesthesia until you leave the recovery room. Your anesthesiologist makes sure that the entire anesthesia is tailored to your specific requirements to ensure your experience with anesthesia is a safe and easy one. He or she will also be responsible to check all equipment to ensure it is working properly before you undergo anesthesia. A well-trained and certified Anesthesiologist knows what to do if a situation occurs with any of the equipment during your anesthesia. He or she will be with you throughout your operation, monitoring you and your surgeon. Your anesthesiologist also continuously watches a number of monitors that measure many of the things happening to you while you are under the effects of the anesthesia. Should there be any complications, either because of the anesthesia medications, or more likely because of the operation, your anesthesiologist will respond quickly, having been fully trained in managing emergencies.

Modern anesthesia is extremely safe, despite some of the stories you hear. To compare one hour of being under anesthesia with, say, one hour spent in traffic or on a one-hour plane trip, the risk of dying is about one in ten thousand in traffic, about one in one million in an aircraft, and one in 100,000 – 500,000 during anesthesia. If you compare one hour of having anesthesia with an hour of air travel, then the risk of dying is about five to ten times higher during anesthesia. In contrast, an hour spent parachute-jumping carries a risk of death about 20 – 100 times that associated with anesthesia. The safety of anesthesia has increased over the years, even though much more complicated operations are being performed, for patients with more severe illnesses. In most Western countries, the risk of death associated with anesthesia has decreased to one-tenth of what it was thirty years ago. You can be confident that modern anesthesia is very safe.

DID YOU KNOW BREAST IMPLANTS HAVE A WARRANTY?

It's true! Breast implants, be it saline or silicone, have a manufacture warranty!
The leading manufactures for breast implants with our practice are both Mentor and Allergan . Both companies offer patients a *ten year warranty, and even a*lifetime warranty for breast implants, starting from the day the patient has their augmentation surgery. This doesn't mean that implants need to be replaced after ten years, as many patients guess, but rather that manufactures want to provide patients with some assurance about their choice (or surgeon's choice) in their products.

The warranty typically includes a free replacement device(s), and *financial compensation starting at $1200-$2400. *this is dependent on type of warranty, and manufactures limitations and exclusions. see manufactures direct web-page(s) for details.

The warranty is for damage(s) of product. This only covers rupture due to loss of shell integrity, including patient trauma and unknown cause but does not apply to :
  • adverse reactions other than rupture
  • removal of intact implants due to capsular contracture, wrinkling or rippling
  • loss of implant shell integrity resulting from reoperative procedures, open capsulotomy, or closed compression capsulotomy procedures
  • removal of intact implants for size alteration
  • events covered by insurance
It's important to go over with your Surgeon(s) and Surgeon(s)' staff all the information you deserve to know about the manufacture and manufacture's warranty when opting for breast augmentation. The more you know, the more comfortable and confident you will feel about making your decision for breast augmentation surgery.
